Paul grew up in the Dutch colonial city of Batavia (Jakarta). With the Japanese invasion most of his family was murdered in internment camps. Paul was sent to Japan a slave labourer & was working in Nagasaki when the U.S. bomb went off. After the war, Paul helped the repatriation of Dutch refugees to Australia, taught English at Bathurst migrant camp & later became Mayor of Warringah Council in Sydney.
